Working with local experts on media relations

March 23, 2015

The Benefit to Boots on the Ground
(Part one of a three-part-series)

Paige PR delivers strategic communications campaigns for international upstream oil and gas companies. Some sell products, some sell services, but all have offices and operations all over the world. Great gig, right? Right.

One topic that’s recently come to the center of our PR-focused world is that from a media relations perspective, what clients are dealing with on a daily basis in North America is drastically different to what those same clients are dealing with in other regions. There are a number of reasons for this; however, the biggest distinctions we’ve seen are the culture and understanding of local media. Naturally, this creates communications challenges for any organization operating in multiple geographies.

While Paige PR strives to know everything about the media landscape in the world’s energy capitals, the simple truth is, working with a media relations expert local to the region is a distinct advantage in oil and gas communications.

Let us give you an example. The price of oil has dropped dramatically; as the industry adjusts, layoffs and rate cuts are becoming more frequent. In Houston, the mood among the industry is to ‘tighten the belt in 2015’, but as in previous years, this too shall pass. In monitoring the news, media statements are somewhat typical in addressing the current market situation and subsequent furloughs. But in analyzing the media in other locations, the tone and scale of the reaction varies considerably, and in some cases layoffs are headline news. As a result, international companies have had to adjust their communications strategy accordingly.

How does this impact energy companies? And what’s the real benefit to having boots on the ground?

When Paige PR and Aspectus PR joined forces, our objective was to provide real value to clients with operations all over the world. Recently, we’ve tested the strength of that relationship and it’s proven itself. By joining forces, we’ve been able to provide our international clients with enhanced media relations support for communicating complex messages to key audiences in different regions, building their credibility across the globe. At a time of uncertainty when communication is critical, this is invaluable to our clients.

Paige PR and Aspectus PR work together for our clients seamlessly; however, we address the same clients’ needs very differently. And it works, effortlessly.

The value of working with local experts handling local matters cannot be underestimated. For more information on partnering with a PR firm in your region, please email us.
