Make Your Key Messages Stick

March 25, 2024

There are usually two polarizing opinions on media training. Either people feel like the task can be completely daunting, with so many tips and tricks to try to remember, or people feel like it’s a waste of time, because, “I know how to talk about my company and what we do.”

Today, people are bombarded with information. For your story to “stick” you need to have your messages on point. Here are the top three tips for developing and delivering key messages that are sure to resonate.

Consider your audience – hint it’s NOT the journalist. When crafting your key messages, it’s crucial to focus on your target audience rather than the journalist who may be conducting the interview. Understanding who you are speaking to will help you tailor your message to resonate with them effectively. Take the time to research and analyze your audience’s demographics, preferences, and interests to ensure your key messages are engaging and relevant to them. By aligning your messaging with the needs and expectations of your audience, you can create a more impactful and memorable communication that truly connects with the people you are trying to reach. Remember, effective communication is not just about what you say but also about how well it is received and understood by your audience.

Practice – People appreciate clear and concise, rather than rambling. Your key messages should reflect the main points you want to convey and align with the image or reputation you want to project. By having your key messages prepared in advance, you can ensure that you stay focused and on track during the interview. Remember to practice delivering these messages confidently and naturally, so they resonate with your audience and leave a lasting impact.

Be authentic – Authenticity is the key to connecting with your audience on a deeper level. People can sense when someone is being genuine, and this sincerity builds trust and credibility. Instead of trying to memorize scripted responses, focus on speaking from the heart and sharing your true thoughts and feelings. This will not only make your message more compelling, but also help you establish a genuine connection with your audience. Remember, authenticity is always in style.

Remember, key messages are not just about what you want to say, but also about what you want your audience to remember. By honing in on your key messages and delivering them with clarity and conviction, you can increase your communication impact and leave a lasting impression on those you interact with.
